2 days in Naples: tips by a local guide

2 days in Naples? Let's start by saying this: 2 days for a complete experience are not enough. For a city like Naples 2 days are just needed to understand how immensely beautiful it is. 2 days is right to have a view of the city and taking a day trip from Naples.

2 days in naples

If you only have a couple of days, I will tell you what to see and what to do giving you some options. The options depend on many factors, when you go and how far you can travel from Naples! Below is a list of the places, in my opinion, recommended to visit outside Naples:

  • Vesuvius (climbing it)
  • Herculaneum ruins
  • Pompei ruins
  • Sorrento and Amalfi coast
  • Capri, Ischia e Procida (neapolitan islands)

2 days in Naples: day 1

The first day I would dedicate, if I were you, to visit Naples itself! The reason is also due to the time when you check in at a B&B or hotel (early afternoon). So I would use the second (full) day for a nice trip around Naples !
For what to do in Naples on the 1st day I will not take away a lot of time because I redirect you to another article of mine. In this article I will explain exactly what to see and do in Naples in one day by walk !

2 days in naples

Yes by walk, because if you like to walk you will enjoy Naples in all its beauty step by step! On foot everything is more beautiful, breathe every alley, every perfume that comes out from every shop, live the city!
I love walking around my Naples, it makes me happy, I don't know, it will be the sun, the sea, the carefree people ... The feeling of relaxation that I have as soon as I am on the seafront is inexplicable! In the article you will find everything you need to know

2 days in Naples: day 2

Options for the 2nd day

As I have already told you in the preface, on the second day you can have a nice trip out of town, but where? Unlike many other blogs, I don't write you 100 things you can do and you will never do, I give you options ! It is up to you to choose which ones you are most interested in.

Capri - Ischia - Procida

The three magnificent Phlegrean islands of the Gulf of Naples are one of the options! Visiting all 3 of them is impossible in one day, the ideal is to visit 1 and I will give you a view of all 3.

Capri

I put it first than the others for a very specific reason: I used to live in Capri for 6 months (working there for 7 months) and I love this island! Among the 3 is the intermediate one (in terms of size) and can be visited in one day. It would be perfect to spend a night there to appreciate it 100% but a day is just fine!

Visiting the center and its pedestrian streets is a must to do by visiting:

  • Augustus Gardens
  • Via camerelle and its colors
  • Faraglioni rocks
  • Anacapri, its lighthouse and magical sunset
  • One of the many restaurants by the sea
  • If you are able to, the wonderful blue grotto

Take a look at this complete tour of Capri with a guide who will make your visit easier .

Procida

The smallest of the 3 but no less beautiful! In Italy there is a famous saying that says: in the small barrel there is good wine . Procida is exactly like that, a small island with many beauties

  • La Corricella
  • Vivara Island
  • Beaches which were the set for the movie of the actor Massimo Troisi
Procida

All these spots can be visited in one day, which I did with the help of a bicycle . About Procida, in fact, I wrote an article where I explain you what to visit in one day by bike .

Ischia

The largest of the 3 and certainly the most difficult to visit in one day. Ischia (being larger) is full of things to visit. What I can tell you is that a day overlooking can be done and if I were a tourist I would visit:

  • Aragonese castle
  • Natural thermal bath or
  • One of the many beaches
  • Walking in the city center
Ischia

For Ischia, the ideal would be at least 2 nights/3 days but in one day you can get an idea.
Indeed, I'll give you another dispassionate advice: a guided tour of both Ischia and Procida islands. They are very close to each other and visiting them together is a must as well as convenient.

2 days in Naples: day 2 - Sorrento and Amalfi coast

Of these 2 places I could write a book, or rather two. The Sorrento and Amalfi coast are a must if you are in Naples for several days. To be taken as an option (visiting one or some of the cities) if you are in Naples for two days.
The city I recommend you to visit is the wonderful Sorrento and its beauties . From here, then, you can move to some other city you wish to see:

  • Positano (Amalfi coast)
  • Amalfi
Gianluca-Acampora

Is it worth it? Absolutely yes. I don't have to say that a week would not be enough to visit these places. One day is always needed to give you a overlooking and appreciate its many beauties.
About Sorrento coast I wrote an article overlooking its cities . You can find some ideas if you decide to go there.

Also for Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast I recommend a tour with transport included, pick-up (Hotel, station or port) and return.

How to get to Sorrento

  • Reaching the coast from Naples is simple through the Circumvesuviana (special railway line).
  • You can also reach Sorrento from Naples by ship or hydrofoil.

Vesuvius the volcano

Another beautiful alternative: climbing the Vesuvius . The emblem of Naples present in each photo, to be discovered in all its volcanic essence.
Climbing Vesuvius is a unique experience that takes at least half a day. Once there, due to the presence of the dark floor, you will feel like you are on another planet.

visit vesuvius

Once at the top you can admire its mouth and its magnificent view on Naples and the Sorrento coast . On the top of Vesuvius there is a pedestrian path that will make you walk along the edge of the mouth. The experience is beautiful because, if you don't know it, Vesuvius is a volcano that is still active and that in the past erupted.
The eruption caused the destruction of several cities, in particular Herculaneum and Pompeii. In fact, in these two cities, you can visit the ruins.

Buy Vesuvius tickets online in advance (with transfer included) because it is a very popular attraction and they could end up.

Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins

Renowned all over the world for their history, Pompeii and Herculaneum are visited by millions of people. The ruins are a consequence of the eruption of Vesuvius, creating an open-air museum.
If you are a lover of history, art and culture, this is certainly a nice stop to do.

pompeii tour and tickets

The ruins are of a disarming charm with their architecture and art .
Walking through the ruins takes you back in time, a deep in to the past ... making you live those moments where you didn't even have time to think. Thinking what was going on before the Vesuvius decided to wake up ...

If you already want to buy tickets online for the Pompeii ruins with transport included from Naples.

How to get to Pompeii and Herculaneum

  • Very easy to reach with the Circumvesuviana (railway line) at the stations of:
  • Herculaneum Excavations
  • Pompeii Excavations

2 days in Naples: conclusions

Naples can be visited in 2 days… but as you understand it is tough. It is hard to choose what to do on the second day among the many alternatives. Unfortunately, if you only have two days, you just have to choose.
I hope you liked the article and that I can be a starting point and I hope that you will come to Naples for more than two days.

Naples is a city to live, breathe, corner by corner. A city that leaves you a lot and that, as a movie says, will make you cry, once you arrive and leave.
