Agropoli Italy: what to do and see

Agropoli or, as they would call it in dialect, Aruòpëlë or Aruòpuli is a real babydoll of Cilento coast in Italy. Why? Breathtaking landscapes, good food, culture and history… what else? Maybe someone who could show all this in an article. Agropoli and what to see … are you ready?
I am, with all the photos and videos shot for you. I will take you to discover this city of the Cilento coast and of which it is the fulcrum. Its beaches, the medieval centre through its alleys, the Aragonese castle.

Agropoli Italy

I will advise you where to stay and enjoy some places in total relaxation. Where and what to eat in one of the areas of Campania where food is a cult.
I'll tell you how to get there by public transport in case you do not have your own vehicle.
Now I would say to start with a nice photo to make you understand what we are talking about and then "ce ne iamme subit a mare" "we will go to the beach"! Let’s go.

Agropoli Italy: the beaches

In Agropoli there are several beaches , some more in the center, some less, to be reached by car or bus. I start from its beaches because Agropoli is a purely tourist and summer destination . And also because we can "wash our eyes" a little. (Where I come from it means see something wonderful.)
I'll tell you right away that next to all the beaches that I will list there are also private beaches, then the choice is yours.

Free beaches in Agropoli

San Marco beach

If Agropoli will be your summer destination or for a weekend and you are driving, you should know that this is the first you will see. Once you enter Agropoli, the San Marco seafront and its beach will make you feel immediately on holiday.
I don't know, they will be the palm trees and the castle in the background but it gives me this feeling every time I step on it.

Agropoli Italy

The San Marco beach is certainly the largest in the city. It alternates between private beaches and free beaches . In the evening the wow effect is ensured by the sunset that falls straight into the water.
If you find yourself, make a pit stop at Libeccio ( waterfront bar) for a coffee or an aperitif.

Licina beach

Unlike San Marco, the Licina is a small secluded beach. In fact, they call it the Agropolesi beach and getting there is not difficult. You just have to climb many stairs to get there. Recommended!

San Francesco beach

Even farther from the city center is the San Francesco beach . It is located immediately after the port of Agropoli and is famous for the rock of San Francesco . Rocky, small and perfect to stay away from the chaos.
You reach it through a small path that starts from the Church of San Francesco .

San Francesco's rock: curiosity

We are in 1222 when the friar of Assisi is on a pilgrimage and is located right here. In Agropoli, according to legend, it is a devotee who dedicates that cross to him in the middle of the sea.

A cross on a rock that is never overlooked by the sea, even with strong storms.
It caresses it, touches it, as if to show respect for that person. As if it were a sign of eternal prayer.

Trentova bay

This bay is one of the most popular places in the city. The only "drawback" is that you have to reach it with own vehicles , but it's absolutely worth it. The reason is because it is isolated from the city and is an oasis of relaxation surrounded by nature.

Trentova bay

If you want more info on prices (of the beaches) and how to reach the bay I wrote a special article:
The 5 most practical ways to reach Trentova bay

Agropoli Italy: the elephant cave

It's incredible what nature can do, in this case giving harmonious shapes even to rocks. The elephant cave is located at the far end of the city, visible only by sea.
The options would be:

  • boat tour
  • kayak tour
Elephant sea cave Agropoli

My passion for kayaking is now well known. It is an activity that I have been practicing for several years and that relaxes me a lot. Needless to say, it obviously makes me discover also exceptional places . Places that are often inaccessible even for boats because they are too large.

Kayak tour in Agropoli

The kayak tour in Agropoli can be more or less long, depending on what you want to see. I (due to lack of time) only explored the elephant cave area. Close to it there are also some beaches where you can stop and stop with the kayak.

There is a association , right on the beach of the port of Agropoli, where you can rent them . You will find the nice Alberto ready to explain what to visit in the surrounding area. The tour includes life jackets and a container for personal belongings.

  • Price: 2 euro/h

Agropoli Italy: the medieval centre

The "borgo" or old Agropoli as many call it is one of the attractions not to be missed. The reasons are many, and I will tell you and show them below. Among all, the main reason is its immense charm. The historic center of Agropoli is located in the upper part of the city. Tip : wear comfortable shoes.
An other tip , if you decide to visit this part of the city either early in the morning or in the evening.

Agropoli city center

With high temperatures it is not the best. You know those places where time has stopped? Old Agropoli is like that. Charm and beauty , of those of yesteryear! Impossible not to take a tour of the narrow and characteristic alleys.
Why? Easy. At the top, after many stairways and streets, you will find the Aragonese castle and its view. But first, you can stop at church square of Constantinople . Breathtaking view of the port of Agropoli assured.

Agropoli Italy: the Aragonese castle

It is there, which stands out on the promontory of the city. The Castle, in Agropoli, gives him that touch of a fairy tale , romantic, unique. The imposing walls can be admired even before entering. Admission is subject to a fee (a few euros).

Agropoli castle walls

Visiting the castle takes a short time if you do it by yourseld, often there are exhibitions/events inside. What definitely makes this place unique is also the view. Indeed, from the castle, there is a beautiful view of the seaside of the city and the coast. Advised.

I also advise you to do a nice guided tour of the castle of Agropoli. The tour then continues outside the castle, on foot, to the medieval village. I will tell you more, there is a food tasting included, take a look at it.

Agropoli Italy: the port

I love ports, they give me a feeling of shelter and protection . In Agropoli the port is one of the attractions not to be missed. I don't know about you, I like walking in the ports with all those expensive boats that make me feel poor.

Agropoli harbor

The port of Agropoli is very large, if you love walking it's a panacea. Along the harbor there are also bars and restaurants where you can refresh yourself.
The one definitely not to be missed is the old town skyline which can be seen from multiple locations. As usual, I enjoyed taking lots of photos both day and night.

Agropoli Italy: do you like sunsets?

Do you know that there are places and places for sea places too? why? If you talk to a person who lives in a seaside location and goes around as many, he would be able to answer you.
Fortunately for you, you are reading this article and I will explain why. There are 2 types of sea places : those where the sunset (in my part we would say) falls into the sea and not.

Sunset Agropoli

Researchers at Brigham Young University in Utah have discovered the benefits of sunset . It helps the body to relax and the mind to free itself from stress and worries . Mark it while looking at my photos.
Agropoli is the one where the sunset falls into the sea. Where with calm, silence and relaxation the sun disappears and disappears into the water. I put it among the things to see, because the sunset for me, especially in these places, is special.

Where to sleep in Agropoli with a sea view

If you've come across my blog a few times before, you already know how I feel about certain topics. For me when you go on vacation you blow off some steam , completely. I am and will always be a spokesperson for: s camp na vota sol (you only live once).

Sometimes, taking off some whims is good for the body and mind. A nice breakfast and a nice landscape changes your day completely. For this I will recommend 2 beautiful B&Bs in this article. I have been in both and both with a beautiful view.

Suite Vista Mare

It is located in a small street in the center of Agropoli. The same road that then leads you to the Licina Beach that I mentioned at the beginning. Suite Vista Mare is perfect for me for 4 reasons:

  • The wonderful view of San Marco seafront
  • Calm
  • The proximity (2 minutes walk) to the Licina Beach (5 minutes walk) from the city center
  • Services

I would like to focus on services in particular. First of all, the reservation system is very simple and state-of-the-art. A newly booked code is sent via email / mobile phone. This code that allows you to enter the camera without keys thanks to a keyboard .

suite vistamare agropoli

I found it very comfortable and useful.
You can take advantage of the room service by downloading the app and order breakfast. In addition to breakfast, you can also order some savory dishes. Great availability of the staff for any need. Highly recommended. I leave you the booking.com link of vistamare suite to book one of the rooms.

100 passi dal mare

Another B&B that I can recommend is 100 passi dal mare. Oh, it really is 100 steps by the sea. It is always located in the central area, a few steps from the seafront and the city center. The view, however, especially from the beautiful suite changes.
The background, this time, is the promontory of Agropoli and here too the advice is given by 4 factors:

Agropoli Italy
  • The wonderful view of promontory of Agropoli
  • Relax (with the sea sound on background)
  • The proximity (30 seconds walk) to the beach (5 minutes walk) from the city center
  • Services (here there is a classic breakfast room where the staff will put you at ease). Recommended.

I also leave you the link of 100 passi dal mare to book one of the rooms.

What and where to eat in Agropoli

Let's say, Agropoli and Cilento in general is very famous for food. Cilento is an extraordinary land that between sea and land offers unique products . But we are in Agropoli, a seaside city, and I will tell you not so much "where" to eat but "what".
The fact is that I have not been able to select specific places and I ate randomly every day. The lowest common denominator , however, is this: eating badly in Cilento is difficult.

Tuffiamoci qui: the fish "cuoppo" a few steps from the port

Leaving Cilento without eating the infamous cuoppo of fish is an outrage. The place I recommend where to get it is “Tuffiamoci qui” for quality and proximity to the port. (Via Giuseppe Mazzini, 43)
The second option is not written so at random, do you know why? Try to imagine: summer evening, relaxation, a certain peckish without giving up the view.

Cuopperia-Agropoli

I only know one word: takeaway and all down to the port!
The cuopperia also has an indoor room and a garden where to be able to sit comfortably. I preferred to take away and sit down at the port and enjoy the skyline of old Agropoli. Nino and his staff will be ready to welcome you.

Al Dente restaurant

A few steps from the seafront I discovered this small restaurant near my B&B. How is that said? In the small barrel there is good wine. I can recommend it because I ate there 3 consecutive days and all 3 I found myself very well.

seafood restaurant Agropoli

I got to try both seafood (mostly) and meat dishes. The menu is very lean, which I like, few things but well done. I also liked the presentation of the dishes, taken care of.
I will be back. Above all, I will return to Agropoli to write an article only on catering establishments.

  • Convenient for its proximity to both the seafront and the city center.
  • Excellent value for money
  • Kindness of the staff

Il Granato

Another place I suggest you visit is the Granato . A place surrounded by nature and which on paper is defined as a dairy / yoghurt shop. In fact, you will find many products of confectionery genre . Outside it has a very nice terrace with a view of the surrounding greenery.

Granato-Agropoli

I personally tried a nice tart with figs . I also recommend the place because it is perfect for families. In fact, in the green of the meadows you will find animals grazing.

What to see around Agropoli

The beautiful thing about Agropoli is not only the city itself but also the surrounding area. By outline I mean the cities and places you can visit nearby.

Santa Maria di Castellabate

It is located immediately after Agropoli and is one of the most popular destinations in Cilento. Much smaller than Agropoli but very pretty. Santa Maria went to the headlines also thanks to the film " Benvenuti al Sud ". that means: welcome to the south.

Santa-Maria-di-Castellabate

Many scenes of the film, in fact, are shot in this area and beyond. I recommend it because you can also visit it in half a day. Before getting there, you should come across a very famous bar near a roundabout. Its name is La Torretta , stop for a pit stop.

Bar-Torretta-Santa-Maria-Castellabate

San Marco di Castellabate

Instead, it is located immediately after Santa Maria and is even smaller. Here too, to visit the place, it does not take long. The harbor area is very nice with lots of little restaurants and bars.

San-Marco-di-Castellabate

Paestum

Not only enchanting but also rich in history. Paestum in Cilento is a flagship for its temples. Temples dating back more or less to 500 BC
I had the pleasure of spending time there both day and night. Advise? Go there especially in the evening which are illuminated and are of immense charm.

But most importantly, once in the area, visit these magnificent temples. The cost of the visit is not excessive and will be worth it. I leave you the link where to buy tickets for the temples of Paestum (with and without guide).

Templi-Paestum

Unfortunately, in the evening I don't have a photo but finding them in the middle of the fields, in front of you, is amazing.
Even in Paestum you will find a lot of cafes. You can find the pedestrian historic center where you can take a nice walk

How to get to Agropoli

In addition to your own transport, it is possible to reach Agropoli by public transport. Train and bus are the only alternatives to get here and beyond. Always by train and bus, you can reach other destinations near Agropoli. I leave you the link on how to reach Agropoli by train and bus from your starting point.

Agropoli Italy: conclusions

This tour in Agropoli is over. I hope you enjoyed it as usual and found it useful and inspiring. I hope to return soon to Cilento to visit better places and new ones. And remember: who travels lives twice.
