La Ribeira: ideal for couples

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ribeira is Portugal's most famous postcard. With its colorful houses huddled together, laundry hanging in the sun, and traditional boats (rabelos), the atmosphere here is simply magical.

• Why for couples: There is nothing more romantic than waking up with a view of the famous Dom Luís Bridge. Ending the day walking hand in hand along the riverfront at sunset. And why not, perhaps stopping at a historic cellar for a Port wine tasting. The accommodations here are often housed in renovated period buildings, ideal for a romantic getaway.

Boavista: Perfect for families

Moving away from the medieval historic center, you enter a more modern and airy Porto. The neighborhood of Boavista is the residential and business district par excellence. Here the streets widen and the steep hills almost completely disappear. The architecture becomes contemporary, housing attractions such as the famous Casa da Música.

• Why for families: It is the most convenient area for those traveling with children and strollers. Being a flat area, you can move around effortlessly. The hotels and apartments here offer much larger floor plans compared to the small buildings in the historic center. Additionally, the area is close to large green spaces and is well-served by the metro (which takes you downtown in just a few minutes). It guarantees quiet and peaceful nights, far from the chaos of mass tourism.

Where to Stay in Porto Portugal: La Baixa

The Baixa is the beating heart of Porto. This area, which develops around Avenida dos Aliados and the famous São Bento station, is the "upper" part of the center. Staying here means having everything at your fingertips. Monuments, shops, historic cafés, and the main public transport stations will be just a few steps away.

• Why for solo travelers: The area is very safe and incredibly lively. It is just a stone's throw from the nightlife districts, such as the streets around the Clérigos Tower and the Galerias de Paris, where it is very easy to socialize. Additionally, it is home to Europe's best design hostels and many boutique hotels. Perfect for travelers who want to be in the center of the action without having to take transport at night.
