San Nicola's Island
San Nicola is the historical, administrative, and spiritual heart of the Tremiti Islands. As soon as you disembark, you'll find yourself immersed in an atmosphere of times gone by. Don't miss the imposing Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare and the mighty Castello dei Badiali. The island is steeped in myth: the Tomb of Diomedes, the Homeric hero whose companions, according to legend, were transformed into seabirds, is said to be located here.
What to do in San Domino
Whilst San Nicola embodies history, San Domino is the green heart of the archipelago. It is the largest and most popular island with tourists, cloaked in a dense forest of Aleppo pines that stretches almost right down to the sea. In fact, this reminded me very much of Australia, where I spent two years (read the article here). The must-see spot here is Cala delle Arene.

Unlike the other rocky coves, this is the only beach with soft white sand in the Tremiti Islands. The shallow water and colors ranging from emerald to turquoise make it a corner of pure paradise. Get there early in the morning (unless you're taking a boat tour) to beat the crowds and enjoy the crystal-clear water.
Boat Tour: An Experience Not to Be Missed
The Tremiti Islands are best explored by sea, like all islands. A boat tour of the archipelago is absolutely essential. Sailing along the coast, you can enter the spectacular Grotta del Bue Marino, where the sunlight creates unreal blue reflections on the water. The tour will also allow you to admire the Scoglio dell’Elefante and the majestic submerged statue of Padre Pio.

Where to Stay and Why to Spend the Night There
The Tremiti Islands are a day trip destination in most cases. However, if you decide to stay overnight, I have some useful advice. For sleeping, San Domino is the best strategic choice. It offers several options:
- Cala delle Arene Residence: Lulled by the waves
- Hotel La Meridiana: Historic and central buildings
- Villa Elefante: Oases of peace nestled in the pine forest
