Free Things to do in Townsville: walking on 'the Strand'
The Strand is the beautiful street that runs alongside Townsville. For those who live in this town, 'the Strand' is not just a street. It is where thousands of people come every day to run and walk. Where thousands of people stop to watch the sunset. Where you can stop at one of its countless bars and restaurants and enjoy some relaxing moments. Walking on 'the Strand' is definitely something to do and it is also free my friends.
Free Things to do in Townsville: hiking Castle Hill
Townsville, on the seaside, has this beautiful view of Magnetic Island. If you look towards the city, Castle Hill will be your view. You can use your little feet to get to the top of this hill. There is a walking path that starts right from a park in the city.
It takes about 45-50 minutes to walk to the top. The view from the top is beautiful, I recommend you bring water with you. The temperatures in these areas are very high at certain times of the year. Another tip is to reach the top at sunset, the show is guaranteed.
Eating ice cream at Juliette's
I am Italian and believe me when I tell you that eating ice cream at Juliette is a good and right thing to do. There are two in the city, go to the one on “the Strand” facing the sea. Outside the ice cream shop there are tables and chairs where you can relax. Order your favorite flavor of ice cream and listen to the waves of the sea rocking you. It is not free but it is cheap and worth it.
See Townsville from Ardo Hotel
Ardo is a luxury hotel in Townsville, where I worked during my 88 days to extend my visa. At Ardo you will find other interesting things to make your stay special. Ardo has 2 restaurants: Terasu (Japanese) and Marmor (fine dining restaurant). The highlight of the hotel is the rooftop bar with its view: both of the city and Magnetic Island.
Of course I am not telling you to stay here though:
I spent many of my days off writing my articles on this rooftop that had become my source of inspiration. Restaurants and rooftops are accessible to external people and non-guests of the hotel. The incredible view gave me an off-scale calm and serenity. I recommend you stop by for its services and why not, maybe book a night.
What to see near Townsville: Magnetic Island
This very special island is located exactly 15 minutes by hydrofoil from Townsville. Special why? You ask me. Magnetic Island is the island that hosts koalas and wallabies in complete nature.
It is one of the most popular islands in Australia and is easy to visit also because it is small. On Magnetic Island there are also some beautiful beaches that are worth seeing and where you can take a dip. (Be careful of jellyfish at certain times of the year).
What to see near Townsville: the Whitsunday Islands
Just a 3-hour drive from Towsville you can reach Paradise: the Whitsunday Islands. A cluster of 900 islands with breathtaking beaches. To reach the islands you have to take boat or helicopter tours.
The tours depart from Airlie Beach, a small seaside town. I spent 3 days in this area and I can assure you that it is worth every cent.
