Australia Travel Itinerary: 14 Days of Adventures

Before asking yourself what to see in Australia, the question to ask would be another. How much time does it take to decently explore Australia? Let's put it this way: 14 days is a very good starting point but months and months would not be enough. In 2 weeks you can still make a nice travel itinerary visiting extraordinary places.

Australia travel itinerary in 14 days

The itinerary I thought of (and of the places seen primarily by me) is a mix between urban and wild:

  • Melbourne 3 days
  • Tasmania 2 days
  • Sydney 3 days
  • Brisbane 1 day
  • Noosa 2 days
  • Whitsunday Islands 2 days
  • Magnetic Island 1 day

Let's see one by one these fantastic places that will make this trip unforgettable.

city of melbourne

Melbourne is where I would start this itinerary for several reasons. Among these is that Melbourne (and Sydney) is a big city and visiting it is tiring. With this, I want to tell you that we leave the “relax destinations” for the end of the trip.

Australia travel itinerary: Melbourne

Melbourne is an extraordinary city and 3 days are just right to visit it. I lived in this splendid city for 8 months and it was the dream of my life. A city that never tires and always alive, at any time of the day. The attractions and places to visit in the city are numerous and easy to reach.

Melbourne is very well connected by transport but also get lost in its streets. Walk through its streets and observe the daily life of this multicultural city. There are many things to see and experiences to do. In these 3 days, there will also be space for some day trips.

Australia travel itinerary: Tasmania

Keep Tassie Wild which literally means: leave Tasmania wild. It is not just a phrase, but a religion in Australia to leave this place as it is. Exactly as wild, natural, true, and fascinating as it will appear to your eyes.

the-neck-bruny-island tasmania

What a land! One of the most stunning places I have ever seen in my life. Nature, hiking, and unpolluted air, if I am in heaven don't wake me up. Tasmania is the perfect place to have a first touch of wild Australia.

If you don't know, Tasmania is an island (Australian) located south of Melbourne. It's only an hour away by plane. Perfect place for excursions with locations that are completely out of a movie/documentary.

Australia travel itinerary: Sydney

Another city that I liked and that can be reached in a couple of hours from Tasmania. The area that fascinated me the most about Sydney is the harbour.

Gianluca-Acampora

To be clear, it is the one where Opera House is located, one of the symbols of this city. Sydney is huge, and so to visit it you should move with some help. One of these is rent scooters or electric bikes.

Believe me, at the end of the day your feet will thank you. There are several things to visit in Sydney and there is one experience in particular that I suggest. Which one?

Australia travel itinerary: Brisbane

Also known as “Brisvegas”, it is a city in Queensland, 1.5 hours by plane from Sydney. Queensland is a region of Australia famous for its unspoiled places. Brisbane is smaller than Melbourne and Sydney and more at a walking pace.

I liked it a lot, also because near this city there are some heavenly places. Brisbane can be easily visited even in one day and here too there are various things to do.

Australia travel itinerary: Noosa

The place where I learned to surf. The place where surfing is more than a pastime. Where there is no time to rush but only to relax and go with the flow of life. Noosa is just an hour by bus from Brisbane and is among the most beautiful places in Australia. A perfect destination for holidays and where to spend 2 days of pure relaxation.

When I went to its main beach for the first time I saw happiness. People on these surfboards waiting for the right wave to feel one with the water. Noosa is one of the places where you can learn to surf. You can do it by taking lessons that you can book both online and on-site.

What to see in Australia: Whitsunday Islands

Paradise exists. The Whitsundays in Australia are an institution and cannot be skipped. A cluster of 900 islands considered the top of Australia. In addition to the fact that many iconic australian experiences are done right here. By experiences I mean visiting beautiful beaches (Whitehaven beach) and the Great Barrier Reef.

Exactly that, one of the 7 wonders of the world under your nose. Among the many excursions that start from Airlie beach don't miss the one by plane. A small charter will show you the beautiful islands of Whitsundays from above and not only. Part of the tour includes a flight over the great barrier reef and it is an unforgettable experience.

Getting to the Whitsundays from Brisbane takes about 2 hours by plane. The closest airport is Proserpine and from there you can reach Airlie Beach in about 40 minutes.

Australia travel itinerary: Magnetic Island

A place that was literally in front of my house. You should know that for 5 months I lived in Townsville in Queensland. The only city facing the sea from where you can reach Magnetic Island by boat. I lived by the seaside in Townsville and the view of the island accompanied me every day.

Magnetic Island is a very special island, not only for its beaches and unique spots. Its fame in Australia is given by the fact that it is the home of koalas and wallabies (smaller kangaroos). It is impossible not to spot a koala in the wild on this island. Admiring these extraordinary creatures up close always has a certain effect.

Wallabies are also adorable and you can always find them in complete nature. Magnetic Island is a must-see in my opinion on this itinerary. Seeing koalas and kangaroos was a dream of mine, seeing them in the wild was even more exciting.

Australia travel cost

It depends. It depends on your availability and your lifestyle. It can cost the “right” amount or an exorbitant amount due to your money availability. One thing I can tell you is doing a check in advance of some things so you start to get an idea.

Among these there is certainly the airfare and then that of accommodations. I leave you below some useful links to start taking a look at the accommodations.

From this starting point, you can have a look at the prices of other destinations.

Best time to visit Australia

September to November and March to May are definitely the best times. Temperatures vary from place to place and it is good to stay up-to-date during the trip. I leave you with the link to take a look at flights to Melbourne.

Tourist visa Australia

To visit Australia you need a tourist visa which is valid for 3 months. You have to fill out a form on the Australian government website to get it. The visa has a cost that you can always find on the website. I leave you the link to get the Australian tourist visa (very easy to do).
