Kayaking in Dubrovnik: the Unesco World Heritage city

Before talking to you about the tour, of course, I will give you a very small excursus on Dubrovnik . This marvelous medieval city that is perched on the sea is of unique beauty. As soon as I set foot in Dubrovnik I fell in love.

When you arrive in Dubrovnik you can make 2 choices. Or to stay inside the walls (recommended choice) or externally. In my opinion, inside the city walls is a completely different sensation!

Pay a little more, but trust me, the money will be better spent! Dubrovnik was declared Unesco Heritage in 1979 and you will immediately notice why! Lively, full of history, culture and many things to see and do. Among these also the beautiful kayak tour at sunset! Kayaking in Dubrovnik: West Harbour starting point

If you decide to do this experience, obviously there will be a starting point. The name of this place is West Harbor where there is a small bay called Pile Bay. A small and beautiful bay that was also a set of some Game of Thrones scenes. In fact West Harbor, in addition to being the starting point for kayak tours, is also the most visited. The view is wonderful and you can look at it from several points.

West Harbor is also the gateway to Lovrijenac . A fortress overlooking the sea from where you can admire the complete skyline of Dubrovnik. Returning to West Harbor I told you that it is the starting point. Several kayak tours depart from here and in different times of the day.

Which tour and what time you can choose

The tours you can choose are essentially 3 (I will attach the official link). And they are: daily tours (either at 9:30 or 13:30), at sunset at 16:30 or the exclusive one of the Game of Thrones. The prices and times for each of them are respectively 32/35 or 75 euros. The duration time is 3 hours for morning and sunset hours and 5 for Game of Thrones.

I tell you mine: if you choose for the sunset tour, it will be the most beautiful experiences of your life! First of all because during the day with the sun beating in the head it could be more tiring. In the evening, however, in addition to suffering less, is more relaxing because the wind drops.

You should know that, technically, kayaking is much simpler in 2 moments. Early morning or evening, just because there is little wind you make less effort. Then, I tell you that the sunset show with Dubrovnik as a backdrop is surreal.

I think that at the moment I have rarely seen something like this, and I have done some kayaking tours! But I'll tell you about this later.

Meeting point

The meeting point, as I have already told you, is West Harbor where you will find all the kayaks parked. Here you have to get there by yourself and just look for the point on google maps!

Tour introduction

Before leaving, the guides will give you some small explanations about the tour. Most importantly, they will give you directions at the security level. Being alone, I did it with an American I met there. Because the kayak tour is done in two, you will hardly go alone.

Lokrum Island

Once settled and once you understand (if you have never done it) how to get around by kayak, the tour begins. (Because if you have never done it, the guides will show you how to paddle.) As I said earlier, I opted for the one at sunset. Once you leave the bay, the guides will take you to a point halfway between the walls and the bay.

The island of Lokrum is located just in front of Dubrovnik, 700 meters away and is an island with rich vegetation. Its name derives from "acrumen", that is citrus fruit with which it is full and was declared a natural reserve in 1963.

Coasting by kayak along the outside of the island of Lokrum you come across more caves . In 2 you need to stop obligatorily because they are beautiful and very tall. So if you want you can also take some nice pictures! Also because outside the famous waterproof bag there are pockets.

Betina Cave Beach

Once past the various caves of the island of Lokrum we will have to paddle again. Just another bit to reach the most famous and beautiful place of the tour: Betina Cave Beach . However, this is not part of the island of Lokrum but of the coast. Once you arrive, though, believe me that all the strokes will have served for a reason.

Unlike the caves of the island, Betina has also has a large beach. So much so that kayaks are parked here and for an abundant half hour we are free. Free to swim in crystal clear water or snorkel. The seabed is beautiful because it is full of coves, so I recommend it.

At this time, the best thing is also the fact that begins to set the sun . You will begin to see the sky turn orange and you are already imagining what the return will be like. After half an hour and especially after eating something we start again.

Return to the bay

Here it is, the most beautiful moment of the excursion. The moment when the wind is absent, there is an absolute sense of peace and serenity. The sound of the waves, an extreme sense of freedom enters your soul. A feeling absolutely to try, you would like to be there forever. Yet it is time to return, but you enjoy it to the fullest, go slower and do it on purpose!

When you return to the bay you do it coast by coast. Then you will also pass near the (very busy) port of Dubrovnik. Once you arrive in the bay the sunset is in its clou time, you will be very tired but happy.
