In this article, I will tell you what to do and see in Venice for FREE mainly with a walking tour. Venice is an extraordinary city and among Italy's most fascinating and ancient. The only things (NOT FREE) to pay, as in all trips, will be accommodation and food. FREE Venice Walking Tour: bridges
Luckily, walking is still free, as is crossing the beautiful bridges of Venice. Over 350 bridges that connect the city and that are of a beautiful charm.
Rialto Bridge
Venice's main bridge and also the largest. Cross the Rialto Bridge and then stop at the top to admire the Grand Canal of Venice and its view.
Accademia Bridge
Another very important bridge here in Venice and from which you have one of the iconic views of this city. A stop not to be missed to get some nice memory photos.
FREE Venice Walking Tour: Piazza San Marco and its Basilica (seen from the outside)
We said that walking is free, right? Piazza San Marco is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy and is a marvel to behold. In the square, which is already beautiful for the colonnade that surrounds it, you will find the Basilica of San Marco. Access to the basilica is not free BUT you can admire its splendor from the outside.
San Giorgio Maggiore's island
A few steps from Piazza San Marco you can admire (from afar) the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Nearby there is a pier from where you can take memory photos with the island in the background.
Bridge of Sighs
We are in the same area, near San Marco and from where you can reach ponte della paglia. From this beautiful bridge you can admire ponte dei sospiri, suspended inside the canal. Here there is a high flow of gondolas that makes the view pleasant and also very romantic.
FREE Venice Walking Tour: fish market
A folkloristic market in Venice that is worth a visit. Being a seaside city, Venice bases its cuisine mainly on fish. I have been there and it is very nice and I will tell you more: if you stay in a place where you can cook, buy something.
Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo
Another enchanting place with Gothic-Renaissance architecture. You can find this beauty in the San Marco district, near Campo Manin. I found it by chance following a group of tourists who were entering an alley. A narrow alley (where barely 2 people fit) and where at the end you find this gem. P.S. it's free to see it from the outside.
Libreria acqua alta
Iconic place here in Venice and especially for those who love reading. Libreria acqua alta is a unique and special space furnished in Venetian style. On days when there is high water in Venice, books are safe because they rest on gondolas. A system for safeguarding written texts that will leave you amazed.
Venice by night
Another wonderful thing I recommend you do is walking in Venice at night, among its alleys and canals. The atmosphere is surreal, fairytale-like and you will fall in love with its nocturnal peace. During my stay I had a lot of fun taking night photos. If you are a photography enthusiast like me, I highly recommend you go around at night.
What to see around Venice: Burano
If you want to visit the surroundings of Venice, there is a very beautiful island to visit: Burano. Burano is located just 45 minutes by vaporetto from Venice and is famous for its colorful houses. A half day in Burano, in my opinion, should be a must. To get there you should pay the vaporetto ticket (it is not expensive) and I leave the link at the end.
What to eat in Venice
There are so many beautiful places to eat in Venice, so go by feeling. What I will recommend, instead, will be what to eat that is typical:
- Sarde in saor
- Baccalà mantecato
- The cicchetti
- The gò risotto
- I bussolai
Where to stay in Venice
The only thing you will have to pay, unless you sleep under a bridge, is the accommodation. 1st tip: try to stay in the center of Venice for convenience. Now I leave you some links to help you:

This FREE Venice tour unfortunately comes to an end. As you have seen from my article, there are many things to see in Venice for free. A city that can be explored on foot, getting lost in its canals. Venice, after my Naples, is my favorite city in Italy almost as much as Florence.
