Venice one-day itinerary: exploring with an Italian

Can you explore Venice in a one-day itinerary? If this is the first question you are looking for an answer to, I already say yes. I also say: with the right precautions. And with the right precautions I mean:

  • Comfortable shoes (as Venice centre is a pedestrian area and there is a lot of walking)
  • The day pass for transport (which I will tell you about later)
  • Choose a month that is not too hot to avoid long walks in the sun

Venice one-day itinerary: the city from the gondola

Precisely because you will be in Venice for only one day, the gondola ride through its canals is a must. Venice is a city that can also be explored through its beautiful canals. The gondola ride will let you discover Venice in its true essence and is, in my opinion, an experience worth having. I would add: especially if you are with your better half.

Where to take the gondola ride

In my opinion, among the best areas to take a gondola ride are Rialto and San Marco. In the surroundings of these two areas you will find many gondolier stations. Lose yourself among its canals and admire their beauty from the sea.

Venice one-day itinerary: Rialto Bridge

Since 1591 it has been there as you see it today. The Rialto Bridge is the oldest in Venice and connects two key points of the city. From its top you can admire the beauty of the Grand Canal and its buildings. An absolutely unmissable spot that will lead you to the next stop: Piazza San Marco.

Venice one-day itinerary: Piazza San Marco

The only square in Venice as all the other open spaces are called "campi". Piazza San Marco needs no introduction, its beauty is known throughout the world. Iconic in the square is the Basilica with its unmistakable Romanesque-Byzantine and Gothic style. It is worth visiting inside, in my opinion, for its extraordinary beauty.

Piazza San Marco by night

If you have the opportunity to go to San Marco at night, do it. San Marco at night is so beautiful. The lights along the entire colonnade light up, giving it a magical look.

Bridge of sighs

You can find it there, a few steps from Piazza San Marco, reachable in a few minutes on foot. Another iconic bridge of Venice, a bridge suspended from one building to another. It is a spot not to be missed and that many admire from the gondola. Even from San Marco's area, you can take the gondola tour, passing under the bridge.

Venice one-day itinerary: San Giorgio Maggiore's Island

In front of Piazza San Marco there is a beautiful island with a beautiful church. Island that you have often seen in photos on the internet with its unmistakable skyline. In fact, just one vaporetto stop from San Marco, you can reach San Giorgio.

In addition to visiting the beautiful Church, from here you can have a different view of San Marco and Giudecca. Once here, don't forget to stop at the San Giorgio Cafè for refreshments.

Venice one-day itinerary: Accademia Bridge

Another important bridge here in Venice, also the 2nd largest after Rialto. Accademia Bridge is a beautiful spot where you can stop and take some memory photos. I take this opportunity to tell you that the sunset here is beautiful if you have the chance to go at sunset.

Acqua Alta Bookshop

The most famous bookshop in the world is in Venice. Books arranged on gondolas and cats dozing on them. Libreria Acqua Alta is an institution in Venice. If you have the chance, stop by, it's worth a quick visit and taking a souvenir (be it a book or a diary).

Getting around Venice

Getting around Venice has never been so easy: either on foot or by vaporetto. If you want to get around (also) by vaporetto I recommend you get a day pass. I'll leave you the link to buy the Venezia Pass (valid for both vaporettos and trains/buses).

Where to stay in Venice

The first thing I recommend about accommodation is to stay in the center of Venice. The reason is very simple: you will be immediately ready to visit it and get lost among its canals and bridges. I leave you the link of a place I stayed: Combo.

What to eat in Venice

Venice is a city where you can eat a lot of typical things, and here are the ones I have tried:

  • Baccalà mantecato
  • Sarde in saor
  • Spaghetti alla Busara
  • Liver Venetian style

Not to be missed is definitely an aperitif with spritz and Venetian cicchetti. For those who don't know, cicchetti are snacks/bites to accompany an aperitif.

How to get to Venice

Venice can be reached by all means (train, bus and plane) and I leave you the following:

What to see around Venice: Burano

If you have a little more time (2 days), Burano is definitely a place to visit once in Venice. In just 40 minutes by vaporetto you can reach the rainbow island. Rainbow for the colorful houses that distinguish it all over the world. Lose yourself in its streets full of colors and slow life.
