One day in Mykonos is never wasted, even if you move on foot. I'll tell you more: if you have enough time, you can even take a dip at one of the most beautiful beaches, just 15 minutes away by bus. If you only have half a day, I recommend simply strolling through the center. I'll explain everything now, ready? Iamme ià (Let's go).

Morning: From Fabrika to Ornos Beach
The vast majority of people visiting Mykonos in one day arrive by sea. Depending on the port you arrive at, I’ll give you two different solutions to reach Fabrika. The latter is the central bus station that connects the entire island. In Mykonos, you can disembark at the Old Port or the New Port, but what are the differences?
From the Old Port
If you arrive at the Old Port, which is located right next to Chora (Mykonos Town), the walk is short and pleasant:
- Walking time: about 10-15 minutes
- Route: you cross the historic center or follow the seafront. The Fabrika bus station is located in the southern part of the city, just a 5-minute walk from the famous Windmills.
- Important note: at least on the way there, I wouldn't linger too much to chill in the center; you can do that more calmly later on your way back
From the New Port (New Port - Tourlos)
If you arrive at the New Port (where most ferries and cruise ships dock), the journey on foot is more demanding:
- Distance: about 3.5 – 4 km.
- Walking time: between 40 and 50 minutes.
- Important note: the road can be busy, narrow, and lack sidewalks in some sections, making the walk under the sun quite inconvenient
Recommended alternatives from New Port
If you prefer to avoid the long walk from the New Port, you have these options:
- SeaBus: un cómodo servicio de barco-lanzadera que conecta el Puerto Nuevo con el Puerto Viejo (centro de la ciudad) en unos 10 minutos por un coste de 2€. Desde allí, Fabrika está a pocos minutos a pie.
- Public bus (KTEL): there are direct connections from the New Port to Fabrika. The cost is about €2 – €2.50 and the journey takes about 30 minutes. On the way back from the beach, you'll then have the chance to take a nice stroll through the city center.
- Taxi: the fastest way (about 5-10 minutes), with a cost that can vary between €23 and €28 depending on availability
What to See in Mykonos in One Day Walking: Ornos
The goal for the morning? Ornos Beach. I chose to have you come here for a very simple reason: it is by far the most beautiful beach among those very close to the center. You can "sciacquarvi gli occhi" (a Neapolitan expression meaning "feast your eyes") on the rest of Mykonos' beaches here.
Well sheltered from Mykonos' notorious wind (the Meltemi), it will gift you with golden sand and a sea that will make you forget all the exhaustion of your journey.
- An extra tip: you will find beach clubs equipped for those seeking maximum comfort, but also free public areas. Recharge your batteries here, because then we head back to the center for more walking!
Afternoon: The Magic of Chora
After drying off in the sun and perhaps grabbing a light bite on the beach, take the bus back to return to Fabrika. P.S. In Ornos you will find both supermarkets for a budget lunch and restaurants on the beach for something typical. From this moment on, legs at the ready: we dive into the beating heart of the island. The Chora of Mykonos is a magical labyrinth, originally created to confuse pirates centuries ago!

The most romantic district. The colorful houses of the old captains are built right at the water's edge, and the waves literally crash beneath the small balconies.

Towards evening: Clubs and Atmosphere
After so much walking, you deserve a break. The Little Venice area is perfect for sitting back and soaking up the atmosphere. You can opt for historic and highly photographed spots like Negrita or Katerina’s Bar, perfect for sipping a drink just steps away from the waves. I’ve been to Katerina’s Bar, and the sunset is out of this world. I'm not sure if you'll have time for dinner, but almost all these places also offer restaurant service.
The Final Treat: The Free Viewpoint
Mykonos is famous for its spectacular sunsets in exclusive beach clubs, often at sky-high prices. But I want to give you a breathtaking view at zero cost. Follow the directions for the Church of St. Vasileios (search for it on Google Maps) and go up the small street just above it. A towel to spread out, a couple of local beers, and some snacks are all you need: you’ll have the best front-row seat for the sunset without spending a single euro.

Where to Sleep in Mykonos for One Night: Little Venice
