3-day Melbourne itinerary: top things to do

Three days are enough to have an overview of what to see in Melbourne. Days in which you will realize why so many people love this multicultural city. I had the privilege of living there for 8 months (and then moved to Queensland). And it was one of the best experiences of my life. Melbourne would be to live to fully understand it. In this article I will let you know it better through my photos. If you're only here for 3 days, a good first idea is to stay in the center, then I'll give you some suggestions. Ready? Iamme ià.

3-day Melbourne itinerary: Flinder Street Station

Once you arrive at Melbourne airport you will find a bus service to the city centre. The bus will stop right next to Melbourne's most iconic station. Flinder Street station, for those who live in Melbourne, is not just a train station. How many times have I walked past this wonderful place (I used to live nearby). One of the most beautiful photo spots in Melbourne and it will be one of the first things you will see (often).

3-day Melbourne itinerary: Princess Bridge

The 1st bridge to be built in Melbourne and is located a few steps from Flinder Street. There are many attractions in Melbourne that are located in the center and can be visited in a few days. From Princess Bridge you have a glimpse of the city among its skyscrapers. Crossing it is the Yarra River which hosts bars and restaurants on the sides. This is the area where I lived and loved for 8 months.

Pedestrian bridge

On both sides of Princess Bridge there are steps that take you down. Continuing along the riverside you can reach another beautiful bridge, the pedestrian one. I lost count of how many times I crossed that bridge in 8 months. All I know is that it is beautiful and you can admire, from here, Princess Bridge and Melbourne. In the evening, when the lights start to turn on, it is a beautiful sight. The setting sun reflects on the windows of the skyscrapers creating a beautiful atmosphere.

3-day Melbourne itinerary: Shrine of Remembrance

Also not far from Flinder Street is an iconic attraction: the Shrine of Remembrance. A monument dedicated to the fallen in war and which can be visited inside. From inside you can reach a terrace from which you have a spectacular view. Very particular are the skyscrapers in contrast with the greenery of the botanical gardens.

Royal Botanical Gardens

The green heart of the city. A space I have been to and it is hard not to love. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne are a space of relaxation from the chaos of the city. The best thing is that from the hills of the gardens you can see the skyscrapers. This mix of urban and nature creates a unique scenario where serenity reigns. A place definitely worth visiting and inside which you can also find some cafes.

3-day Melbourne itinerary: Victoria Library

Always in the center (I'll leave you all the points on a map later) and always near Flinder station. Wow. If I were a student living in Melbourne it's definitely a place where I would come to study. In addition to the beautiful geometric shape I was struck by its simplicity. On the top floor you can have a complete view of the beautiful main hall.

3-day Melbourne itinerary: Queen Victoria Market

Operating since 1878 it is a piece of the city's history. In addition to being the largest market in the city, it is definitely an attraction to see. If you are in Melbourne between September and October, one day a week they also do an event “by night”. The market transforms into a giant food and beverage festival where you can try food from every country. Melbourne is very famous for embracing any type of culinary tradition.

3-day Melbourne itinerary: Panorama from the Skydeck

Always in the Southbank area, where I recommend staying, is Eureka Tower. From the top of this building (among the tallest in Melbourne) you will find the Skydeck. A mobile structure that rotates 360° to get a panorama of the entire city of Melbourne. Needless to say, go there at sunset and that together with the city lights they create a wow atmosphere. At the top you will also find a bar where you can refresh yourself while waiting for the sunset.

3-day Melbourne itinerary: Brighton Beach

If you have seen on the web the famous colored cabins in Melbourne, well, those are on this beach. A place that is definitely worth visiting and where you can relax a bit (also because you have time in 3 days). In fact I will tell you more, I would dedicate a specific day to this area. Near Brighton beach there are two other places (nearby) to visit.

Point Ormond lookout

My favorite place in Melbourne. A place I've been often and fallen in love with because of its unrivaled view. Point Ormond Lookout is a hill located on the waterfront (far from the center). From the hill you can admire the sunset (on one side) and the city skyline (on the other). A sunset that I have seen over and over again and that I will hardly forget. Beautiful spot and not to be missed (hoping it is a beautiful sunny day).

St. Kilda

Melbourne neighborhood to visit especially in summer, being the movida. St. Kilda in Melbourne is an institution. It is the waterfront area in the city, full of restaurants and bars and above all beach volleyball courts. Yes, because people come here to relax, run, play, meditate, sing. Simply find a moment of serenity after a long stressful day. Near St. Kilda there is also its famous pier from which you have a beautiful view of Melbourne.

Great Ocean Road itinerary 1 day

Reserve one of your 3 days to live a unique and rare experience: the great ocean road. Defined as one of the most beautiful roads in the world with its 243 km of pure nature. 243 km to discover the true essence of Australia, with its flora and fauna, its beaches. Its panoramic views will leave you speechless.

When I lived in Melbourne it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. There are daily bus tours that leave from the city center, I leave the link below to book.

If I can give you a piece of advice, try to book on a day where it doesn't rain. The tour stops will be different and I don't recommend spending the day in the rain. A beautiful experience that made me touch the wild Australia. The one I had read so much about.

What to eat and where to eat in Melbourne

The city where you can eat everything, at any time, of any nationality. Melbourne amazed me so much for its food culture. I wasn't even aware that there was a very strong Italian food culture. If I can be honest with you, what struck me was the street food. Every corner with Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Mexican street food and so on. I loved this thing. So my advice is: eat on the street (especially at lunch).

Where to stay in Melbourne

For accommodation I recommend you stay in Southbank area. If you look hard enough, you can also find some beautiful B&Bs with breathtaking views. The area is very central and close to all the attractions mentioned in the article.

Conclusions

Our 3-day trip to Melbourne is over and I hope it has been of some inspiration to you. Melbourne is a city that is definitely worth visiting once in Australia. An interesting thing that I recommend you do is visit it in combination with Sydney. In fact, the two cities are only an hour away by plane. I will leave you with some articles that may be useful to you right after this paragraph. See you the next trip and remember: those who travel live twice!
